Future Owasso Rams Add All-Girls Flag Football Teams Amid National Surge in Participation
The Future Owasso Rams (F.O.R.) Youth Flag Football program has announced the introduction of all-girls flag football teams for the upcoming season. This initiative aims to provide more opportunities for young athletes in the community to engage in the sport.
The F.O.R. Youth Flag Football program is open to both boys and girls, welcoming players of all experience levels. The addition of all-girls teams aligns with a national trend of increasing participation in girls' flag football.
Nationally, girls' flag football has seen significant growth. According to data from the NFHS, the 2023-24 school year, 42,955 girls participated in high school flag football, more than doubling from 20,875 the previous year—a 105% increase . Overall, female participation in flag football reached 1.6 million in 2023, marking a 55% increase from 1 million in 2022 . Among youth aged 7 to 17, participation rose from 419,000 in 2022 to 547,000 in 2023.
This surge in interest has led to broader recognition of the sport. As of early 2025, 15 states have officially sanctioned girls' flag football as a high school varsity sport, with others running pilot programs . The sport's growth has also reached the collegiate level, with institutions like Texas Wesleyan University planning to add women's flag football programs . Furthermore, flag football is set to debut as an Olympic sport in the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Registration for the F.O.R. Youth Flag Football program is open through July. Interested families can sign up by visiting www.sportabase.com and searching for the Owasso Youth Flag Program.
